I was facing one of the most difficult design challenges yet and I had a lot of time to think about it during my flight to Hong Kong. How do I decorate my client's home with quality products, design details that reflect their personalities with very little time to execute it? I had no industry connections, resources and zero knowledge of where to shop or "how it works" in Hong Kong. I had no choice but to somehow gather an arsenal of reliable stores and trades that could make my design plan happen. I had two weeks to make this happen. Pressure was on.
My client's only connection was their agent's business partner, a successful home stager. Lucky for me she stopped by on my first day and gave me a few tips on where to shop. Which led me to many other connections, including other designers and like-minded people in the field. Even though most spoke English, design was definitely our common connection. Within a few days a design team consisting of a skilled cabinet maker, art dealer, seamstress, picture framer, rug dealer, furniture suppliers and a handyman was formed. It was a jammed packed two weeks with many late nights pulling it all together.
I loved Hong Kong and will definitely return to visit my clients and to continue to build my business connections. Next time I'll be shipping a crate home jammed full of beautiful things for my Canadian clients...and me.
